Extending Part 1 answers without memorising themMở rộng câu trả lời Part 1 mà không học thuộc lòng

Learn a simple answer, reason and detail shape that turns short Part 1 replies into natural, extended answers without scripts.Học một khung đơn giản gồm trả lời, lý do và chi tiết, giúp biến những câu trả lời Part 1 ngắn ngủn thành câu trả lời tự nhiên, đầy đủ hơn mà không cần kịch bản soạn sẵn.

In Part 1 of the IELTS Speaking test, the examiner asks short questions about familiar topics such as your home, your studies or work, and everyday interests. This part lasts about four to five minutes. The questions are simple, but your answers are your evidence. The examiner can only judge the English you actually produce.

Two problems are common. Some students give one-word or one-sentence answers, which leaves very little to assess. Others prepare long speeches in advance. These tend to sound recited, and they often don't quite fit the question. The goal sits in between: a short, natural answer of roughly two to four sentences, built on the spot.

A simple shape: answer, reason, detail

Instead of memorising answers, memorise a shape. For almost any Part 1 question you can do the following.

  • Answer directly. Say yes or no, or give the fact first.
  • Give a reason. Why is this true for you?
  • Add a detail or example. Mention something specific, such as a time, place, person or habit.
  • Optionally, add a contrast or a change. How was it different in the past, or when is it not true?

The shape is flexible. You don't need all four steps every time, and two or three is usually enough. What matters is that every sentence is genuinely about you and genuinely answers the question.

Example:

Question: Do you like cooking?

Too short: Yes, I do.

Extended: Yes, I really do, especially at weekends. The main reason is that it helps me relax after a busy week of classes. For example, on Sundays I usually make a big pot of soup and share it with my flatmates. When I was younger I couldn't cook at all, so it's something I'm quite proud of now.

Notice what happened. The first sentence answers directly. 'The main reason is' gives the reason. 'For example' leads to a specific detail. The last sentence adds a change over time. Nothing here is complicated, but the examiner hears a range of vocabulary and grammar, including past and present forms.

Extenders you can reuse on any topic

When you can't think of a reason or example, ask yourself one of these quick questions. Each one opens a new sentence.

Useful questions to ask yourself:

  • When? (usually, at weekends, since I was a child)
  • Who with? (with my family, on my own)
  • Why? (the main reason is..., mainly because...)
  • How do I feel about it? (I find it..., it makes me feel...)
  • Has it changed? (I used to..., but these days...)

Example:

Question: Where do you usually study?

Mostly at the university library, because it's quiet and I can't get distracted by my phone as easily. I usually go in the mornings, when it's less crowded. I used to study in my bedroom, but I found I kept stopping to do other things.

What to do next time

Write down ten common Part 1 topics, such as hometown, food, weather, sport and technology. For each one, don't write an answer. Instead, note two or three true facts about yourself: a habit, a reason, a change. Then answer practice questions aloud using the answer, reason, detail shape. Your answers will sound slightly different every time, and that is exactly the point.

Một khung đơn giản: trả lời, lý do, chi tiết

  • Đưa ra lý do.

Hãy để ý điều vừa diễn ra. Câu đầu tiên trả lời thẳng vào câu hỏi. 'The main reason is' đưa ra lý do.

(usually, at weekends, since I was a child)
  • Với ai? (with my family, on my own)
  • Tại sao? (the main reason is..., mainly because...)
(I find it..., it makes me feel...)
  • Điều đó có thay đổi không? (I used to..., but these days...)

Example:

Question: Where do you usually study?

Mostly at the university library, because it's quiet and I can't get distracted by my phone as easily. I usually go in the mornings, when it's less crowded. I used to study in my bedroom, but I found I kept stopping to do other things.

Key takeaways

  • Part 1 answers work best at around two to four natural sentences.
  • Memorise a shape, not a script: answer, reason, detail and an optional change.
  • Quick questions like when, why and has it changed help you add a sentence on the spot.
