Solving a pair of simultaneous equations

Use elimination and substitution to find two unknowns that satisfy two equations at the same time, and check your answer in both.

Many real problems involve two unknowns at once: the price of two items, or two numbers with a given sum and difference. One equation with two unknowns has endless solutions. Two equations together usually pin down a single pair. These are called simultaneous equations, because both must be true at the same time.
