Why integration finds the area under a curve

See how adding up thin rectangles leads to the integral, and why derivatives give a shortcut for computing it.

Areas of rectangles and triangles are easy. Areas under curves are not, yet they matter: the area under a velocity graph is distance travelled, and the area under a rate-of-flow graph is total volume. Integration is the method for finding these areas, and it works by the same idea as the derivative: build from small pieces, then take a limit.
