Standard deviation: measuring how spread out data is

See what standard deviation means, calculate it step by step, and use it to compare how consistent different data sets are.

An average tells you where the middle of the data is, but not how scattered the values are. Two classes could both have a mean score of 10. In one, everybody might score close to 10. In the other, scores might range from very low to very high. Standard deviation puts a number on that difference.
