How to balance a chemical equation

Learn a step-by-step method for balancing equations using coefficients, so atoms are conserved on both sides.

A chemical equation is like a recipe. In the last lesson you saw that atoms are never created or destroyed, so a correct equation must have the same number of each kind of atom on both sides. An unbalanced equation suggests atoms appearing from nowhere or vanishing. Balancing is also the first step for working out how much of each substance you need.
