Grammatical Range and Accuracy: what examiners look forGrammatical Range and Accuracy: giám khảo chấm những gì
Understand the grammar criterion in IELTS Writing and Speaking, how range and accuracy work together, and which errors to target first.Hiểu rõ tiêu chí ngữ pháp trong IELTS Writing và Speaking, cách độ đa dạng và độ chính xác phối hợp với nhau, và những lỗi nào nên ưu tiên sửa trước.
In both IELTS Writing and IELTS Speaking, your performance is judged against four public criteria. One of them is Grammatical Range and Accuracy (GRA). The four criteria carry equal weight, so grammar counts for roughly a quarter of your Writing and Speaking assessment. Most candidates focus on vocabulary and ideas, which means steady work on grammar is one of the most reliable ways to improve.
Two halves: range and accuracy
The criterion has two parts that examiners consider together. Range is the variety of structures you can use. Accuracy is how free of errors your sentences are, and how much any errors get in the way of meaning.
Range includes things like:
- Simple, compound and complex sentences
- Relative clauses (who, which, whose, where)
- Conditionals (if, unless, provided that)
- Passive forms (is produced, was introduced)
- A natural mix of tenses and modal verbs (could, should, might)
Accuracy is about how many of your sentences are completely error-free, whether your mistakes make the reader or listener work harder to understand you, and, in Writing, whether your punctuation is controlled.
How the bands differ, in plain words
The public band descriptors describe a clear progression:
- Lower bands: mostly short, simple sentences, with frequent errors that can confuse meaning.
- Middle bands: a mix of simple and complex sentences; errors appear but meaning usually stays clear.
- Higher bands: a wide range of structures used flexibly, most sentences error-free, and only occasional slips.
Notice the balance. Long, complicated sentences full of mistakes do not help you. But writing only short, safe sentences limits your range. The goal is controlled variety: complex structures you can actually use correctly.
Example: upgrading a simple Task 2 sentence group
Simple: Many people use cars. Cars cause pollution. The government should do something.
Varied: Because many people rely on private cars, which produce significant emissions, governments should invest in cleaner public transport.
The varied version uses a reason clause (because), a relative clause (which) and a modal (should) in one accurate sentence.
Speaking versus Writing
In Speaking, the examiner listens for the grammar you produce naturally in real time across all three parts of the test. Punctuation obviously plays no role, and you are not expected to sound like a written essay. Natural spoken structures count.
Example: a Speaking Part 1 answer
Question: Do you enjoy cooking?
Basic: Yes. I cook. I like pasta.
Stronger: Yes, I do, especially at weekends when I have more time. If I'm tired, I usually make something simple, but I've recently started trying recipes that my grandmother used to cook.
The errors that cost the most
These errors appear often and are easy to spot, so they are worth fixing first:
- Subject-verb agreement (The number of students have increased)
- Articles (a, an, the) missing or misused
- Wrong tense, especially when describing past data
- Sentence fragments and run-on sentences
- Plurals and countable/uncountable nouns (informations, researches)
- Word form (an economy problem instead of an economic problem)
Next time you write or record a practice answer, check two things: do you have a mix of sentence types, and is each complex sentence correct? In the following lessons you will build that range step by step, starting with relative clauses.
- Mệnh đề quan hệ (who, which, whose, where)
- Câu điều kiện (if, unless, provided that)
- Dạng bị động (is produced, was introduced)
Example: upgrading a simple Task 2 sentence group
Simple: Many people use cars. Cars cause pollution. The government should do something.
Varied: Because many people rely on private cars, which produce significant emissions, governments should invest in cleaner public transport.
The varied version uses a reason clause (because), a relative clause (which) and a modal (should) in one accurate sentence.
Speaking so với Writing
Trong Speaking, giám khảo lắng nghe ngữ pháp bạn sử dụng một cách tự nhiên, ngay tại thời điểm nói, xuyên suốt cả ba phần của bài thi. Dĩ nhiên dấu câu không đóng vai trò gì, và bạn cũng không cần nói như đang đọc một bài luận. Các cấu trúc tự nhiên của văn nói vẫn được tính điểm.
Những lỗi khiến bạn mất điểm nhiều nhất
Những lỗi này xuất hiện thường xuyên và dễ bị phát hiện, vì vậy rất đáng để sửa trước tiên:
- Sự hòa hợp giữa chủ ngữ và động từ (The number of students have increased)
- Thiếu hoặc dùng sai mạo từ (a, an, the)
- Sai thì, đặc biệt khi mô tả số liệu trong quá khứ
- Câu thiếu thành phần và câu nối liền sai cách
- Danh từ số nhiều và danh từ đếm được/không đếm được (informations, researches)
- Dạng từ (an economy problem thay vì an economic problem)
Lần tới khi viết hoặc ghi âm một câu trả lời luyện tập, hãy kiểm tra hai điều: bạn đã kết hợp nhiều kiểu câu chưa, và mỗi câu phức đã đúng chưa? Trong các bài học tiếp theo, bạn sẽ từng bước xây dựng độ đa dạng đó, bắt đầu với mệnh đề quan hệ.
Key takeaways
- Grammatical Range and Accuracy is one of four equally weighted criteria in Writing and Speaking.
- Examiners look for variety of structures and for error-free sentences, not just one or the other.
- Fixing a few frequent errors, like agreement and articles, often brings the quickest improvement.
- Grammatical Range and Accuracy là một trong bốn tiêu chí có trọng số ngang nhau trong Writing và Speaking.
- Giám khảo tìm kiếm cả sự đa dạng về cấu trúc lẫn những câu không mắc lỗi, chứ không chỉ một trong hai.
- Sửa một vài lỗi thường gặp, như hòa hợp chủ ngữ – động từ và mạo từ, thường mang lại tiến bộ nhanh nhất.
