Skimming and scanning: two reading speeds for IELTSSkimming và scanning: hai tốc độ đọc trong IELTS
Learn the difference between skimming for the gist and scanning for exact details, and when to use each in IELTS Academic Reading.Tìm hiểu sự khác nhau giữa skimming để nắm ý chính và scanning để tìm chi tiết chính xác, cũng như khi nào nên dùng mỗi kỹ năng trong IELTS Academic Reading.
IELTS Academic Reading gives you 60 minutes to read three long passages and answer 40 questions. If you read every word slowly, you may run out of time before the last passage. Strong readers do not read every line at the same speed. They change speed depending on the job. Two of those speeds have names: skimming and scanning.
Skimming: reading for the gist
Skimming means moving quickly through a text to understand its general topic, its structure and the writer's main point. You are not trying to remember details. You are building a mental map of the passage: what it is about, roughly what each paragraph does, and where things are.
A quick skim of an IELTS passage usually covers:
- The title, any subtitle and any short introduction in italics
- The first paragraph, read at a steady pace
- The first one or two sentences of each body paragraph
- The last paragraph, which often sums up or looks ahead
- Any diagram, table or glossary at the end
Aim to skim a full passage in two or three minutes. If you catch yourself reading a sentence twice, you have stopped skimming.
Scanning: hunting for a target
Scanning means searching a text for one specific item without reading the words around it. Think of looking for your name on a list. Your eyes slide over everything until the target jumps out. In IELTS, the best targets are things that look different on the page.
Easy things to scan for:
- Numbers, dates and percentages
- Names of people, places and organisations (capital letters help)
- Technical terms and words in italics or quotation marks
- Unusual words that are unlikely to be reworded
Once your eyes land on the target, stop scanning. Switch to careful reading of that sentence and the ones on either side. The answer is usually there, but it is rarely in the exact words of the question.
Which questions need which skill
Some question types depend mainly on skimming. Matching headings, for example, asks you to identify the main idea of each paragraph. Others depend mainly on scanning. Sentence completion, short-answer questions and table completion often contain a name, number or term you can hunt for. True/False/Not Given and multiple-choice questions usually need both: scan to find the right place, then read closely to decide.
Example: a short practice text (invented for this lesson)
Text: 'The Merrow Estuary Barrier protects the town of Kelby from tidal flooding. Its six steel gates normally lie flat on the riverbed. When a dangerous surge is forecast, they rotate upwards to form a wall. Engineers expect the barrier to need upgrading as sea levels rise.'
Skim result: The paragraph describes a flood barrier, how it works and its future.
Question: How many gates does the barrier have?
Scan target: a number near the word 'gates'. Your eyes find 'six steel gates'.
Answer: six
Next time you practise a passage, try this order: skim for two or three minutes, read the first set of questions, then scan for each answer and read closely around it. Notice which answers you found by skimming and which by scanning. In the next lesson, we will turn skimming into a method for finding the main idea of any paragraph.

Key takeaways
- Skimming gives you the general topic and a map of the passage.
- Scanning finds a specific target such as a name, number or term.
- After scanning, always slow down and read the surrounding sentences carefully.
