A. When Westbridge Library extended its opening hours in January, staff expected most new visitors to be students. Instead, the largest increase came from shift workers, who could now borrow books after their evening shifts. The building stays open until 10 pm on weekdays, compared with 6 pm before the change.

B. Keeping the library open did not require a larger staffing budget. Two existing daytime shifts were moved to the evening. However, self-service borrowing machines were installed at a one-off cost of 12,000 pounds. Staff still help visitors who need support.

C. A survey of 240 visitors found that 72 percent valued the later hours. Some neighbours, however, complained about noise outside the entrance at closing time. The library responded by moving bicycle parking away from nearby homes. The council will review the scheme after six months; no decision about weekend hours has been announced.
