False vs Not Given: telling them apart with confidenceFalse và Not Given: phân biệt thật chắc chắn
Learn the exact difference between True, False and Not Given, and a step-by-step method for deciding between them.Nắm chính xác sự khác nhau giữa True, False và Not Given, cùng một phương pháp từng bước để quyết định chọn đáp án nào.
True, False, Not Given questions appear often in IELTS Academic Reading, and many students say the hardest part is choosing between False and Not Given. The difference is not about how strongly you feel. It is about what the passage actually contains. Once you have a clear test for each answer, these questions become much more predictable.
Three answers, three meanings
Each statement is compared with the factual information in the passage:
- TRUE: the passage gives the same information, usually in different words.
- FALSE: the passage gives information that contradicts the statement.
- NOT GIVEN: the passage does not give enough information to say whether the statement is true or false.
Here is the key test. For False, you can point to words in the passage that make the statement impossible. For Not Given, you search the relevant part of the passage and find silence, or only part of the information. If you cannot point to a contradiction, you should not choose False.
A step-by-step method
Use the same routine for every statement:
- Read the statement and underline the keywords, especially names, numbers and small words like only, all, first or most.
- Find the matching part of the passage. Answers to these questions follow the order of the passage, so work forwards.
- Read the whole sentence, and the one before and after it, carefully.
- Ask: does the passage say the same thing? If yes, TRUE.
- Ask: does the passage say the opposite, or something that cannot also be true? If yes, FALSE.
- If neither, the answer is NOT GIVEN.
Example:
Passage (written for this lesson): The town of Elmbrook opened its first public library in a converted grain store. At first, the library lent books only to residents who owned property, but this rule was dropped after a petition from local teachers. Today, the building also houses a small museum.
Statement 1: Elmbrook's first public library was in a building originally used for another purpose.
Answer: TRUE. 'Converted grain store' means the building had another use before.
Statement 2: When the library first opened, any resident could borrow books.
Answer: FALSE. The passage says books were lent 'only to residents who owned property'. That contradicts 'any resident'.
Statement 3: The teachers' petition was signed by several hundred people.
Answer: NOT GIVEN. A petition is mentioned, but the number of signatures is not.
Statement 4: The museum attracts more visitors than the library.
Answer: NOT GIVEN. Both are mentioned, but they are never compared.
Notice statement 4. It uses words from the passage, so it feels familiar, and that familiarity tempts students to choose True or False. But the passage says nothing about visitor numbers. Familiar words are not the same as information.
Small words that change everything
Qualifiers such as all, some, only, always, never, first, mainly and increase often decide the answer. If the passage says 'some farmers' and the statement says 'all farmers', the statement goes further than the passage. Ask yourself whether the passage actually rules out 'all'. If it does, choose False. If it simply does not say, choose Not Given.
What to do next time
In your next practice set, write a short reason beside every answer: the exact passage words for True and False, and 'nothing about X' for Not Given. If you cannot write the reason, look again. This habit trains you to rely on evidence rather than feeling.
Dạng câu hỏi True, False, Not Given (Đúng, Sai, Không có thông tin) xuất hiện thường xuyên trong IELTS Academic Reading.
- NOT GIVEN: bài đọc không cung cấp đủ thông tin để xác định nhận định đúng hay sai.
Đây là phép thử then chốt.
Các từ hạn định như all, some, only, always, never, first, mainly và increase thường quyết định đáp án. Nếu bài đọc nói 'some farmers' còn nhận định nói 'all farmers', thì nhận định đã nói quá những gì bài đọc nêu. Hãy tự hỏi: bài đọc có thực sự loại trừ khả năng 'all' không? Nếu có, chọn False. Nếu bài đọc chỉ đơn giản là không đề cập, chọn Not Given.
Key takeaways
- False needs a clear contradiction you can point to in the passage.
- Not Given means the passage is silent or only partly covers the statement.
- Judge only by the passage, never by your own knowledge.
