A. In the fictional city of Bellford, researchers compared twelve school gardens with twelve paved schoolyards. They counted insects on three mornings each month between April and September. Gardens contained a greater variety of insects, but the team did not measure whether pupils' examination results changed.
B. Teachers initially worried that gardens would create extra work. Each class was therefore assigned one small bed, and a local volunteer watered the plants during holidays. This shared system kept weekly maintenance below two hours per school.
C. The study's authors caution that a garden alone cannot transform science teaching. Its value depends on regular observation and discussion. They recommend that pupils record changes, compare their findings and explain unexpected results, rather than simply memorise plant names.
