Structuring an IELTS Task 2 opinion essay in four paragraphsCấu trúc bài luận nêu quan điểm IELTS Task 2 gồm bốn đoạn

Learn a reliable four-paragraph plan for IELTS Writing Task 2 opinion essays and how to use five minutes of planning to fill it.Học một dàn ý bốn đoạn đáng tin cậy cho dạng bài nêu quan điểm trong IELTS Writing Task 2, và cách dùng năm phút lập dàn ý để triển khai nội dung cho bố cục đó.

In IELTS Academic Writing Task 2 you have about 40 minutes to write at least 250 words in response to a question. Task 2 carries more weight than Task 1, so it deserves most of your effort. The examiner needs to follow your thinking quickly, and a clear structure makes that possible.

Structure is not the whole score, but it supports two of the four marking criteria directly: Task Response (answering the question fully, with a clear position) and Coherence and Cohesion (organising ideas logically into paragraphs). A simple, repeatable plan also saves you time and stress on test day.

The four-paragraph plan

For an opinion essay ('To what extent do you agree or disagree?'), use this shape:

  • Introduction: paraphrase the question, then state your position clearly.
  • Body paragraph 1: your first main reason, explained and supported with an example.
  • Body paragraph 2: your second main reason, explained and supported with an example.
  • Conclusion: restate your position in new words and briefly summarise your two reasons.

Why only two body paragraphs? Because depth beats breadth. Two well-developed ideas usually show more control than four thin ones. In 40 minutes, two strong paragraphs of around 100 words each fit comfortably inside a 260 to 300 word essay.

Plan before you write

Many students start writing immediately and lose direction halfway through. Spending about five minutes on a plan usually saves time later, because you never have to stop and wonder what comes next.

A five-minute planning routine:

  • Read the question twice and underline the topic and the instruction words.
  • Decide your position: agree, disagree, or partly agree.
  • Choose two reasons that support that position.
  • Note one example or consequence for each reason.
  • Write a one-line thesis that names your position and both reasons.

Example: a model plan (written for this lesson)

Question: Some people believe that university education should be free for every student. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Position: Mostly agree.

Reason 1: Free tuition widens access for talented students from low-income families.

Example 1: A capable student who would otherwise take a full-time job can study engineering instead.

Reason 2: Society benefits from a more educated workforce.

Example 2: More graduates can mean more doctors, teachers and engineers serving the public.

Thesis: I largely agree, because free tuition opens university to talented students regardless of income and strengthens the wider economy.

Notice that the plan is short. You are writing notes, not sentences. Once the plan is done, each line becomes a paragraph, and you can focus your energy on clear language.

A rough word budget

These ranges are guides, not rules:

  • Introduction: about 40 to 60 words.
  • Each body paragraph: about 90 to 120 words.
  • Conclusion: about 30 to 50 words.
  • Total: aim for roughly 260 to 300 words, which keeps you safely above the minimum.

Next time you practise, take any opinion question and write only the plan in five minutes. Do this with three different questions before writing a full essay. In the next lesson, we will turn the last line of your plan into a strong thesis statement.

Với bài luận nêu quan điểm ('To what extent do you agree or disagree?'), hãy dùng bố cục sau:

  • Chọn hai lý do ủng hộ quan điểm đó.
